Neck curved, with head at about right angle to body; dorsal fin large, its base elevated; pectorals and anal fin small; no pelvic fins; tail prehensile, curlable, without a tail fin; brood pouch on trunk.

A circumglobal tropical to temperate genus with 50 species; one species, a regional endemic, is found in the tropical eastern Pacific.
