THORNYHEADS

Body moderately compressed; head relatively large & spiny; eyes large; head spines strongly developed, 8 pairs along top of head; longitudinal ridge under eye with 8-10 strong spines; numerous small conical teeth on jaws; teeth present on roof of mouth; a single dorsal fin, strongly notched at the rear of the spiny part, XV-XVII strong, venomous spines, 8-10 soft rays; anal fin III, 4-6; pectoral fin 22-24, with notch in rear border; pelvics I, 5, under pectorals; tail fin straight; lateral line with pored scales; scales small, rough.

A north, temperate Pacific genus with 3 species; 2 species entering our area.
