Front nostrils tubular, with large 2-lobed flap at rear; rear nostril large, in front of and above eye, with a wide raised cup-like rim; jaws long, arched so do not shut completely; teeth large and caniniform, with large fangs at front; origin of dorsal fin before gill opening; tail about equal to head and body; skin with narrow irregular ridges.
The genus contains one Indo-Pacific species, which occurs in the tropical eastern Pacific.
