MORAY EELS

Head and trunk equal to or shorter than tail; snout long and narrow; jaws slender, narrow, strongly arched and not closing completely; teeth conical sharp, with large fangs alternating with smaller teeth along jaws; eye large, at about middle of mouth; front nostril a simple tube, rear nostril a large hole above and before eye; dorsal and anal fins very evident, dorsal origin over or a little behind gill opening; lateral line pores absent except for 1-2 (usually) pores above and before gill opening.

This is a circumtropical genus with 12 species. One species is endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
