BUTTERFISHES

Body ovate, moderately deep, compressed; snout blunt, rounded; mouth small; dorsal and anal fins with long bases, front lobes slightly raised; dorsal with V-VII small spines that are not flat and leaf-like; pectorals longer than head; pelvic fins under thorax in juvenile, absent in adult, adult without spine projecting from pelvis; body spotted.

Three species in this temperate genus which occurs on both sides of the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean, as well as the southeast Pacific; 1 species endemic to the latter area enters our region.
