Body slender, elongate; head long, depressed; 1 pore between eyes; papillae on cheek and gill cover; top jaw extends well past eye; 1st  dorsal fin with IV (rarely V or VI) spines, 1st  spine may be elongate in male, 2nd  dorsal 15-17 rays; anal 13-17 rays; 1 long flexible skin flap on shoulder in front of base of pectoral fin; tail fin long, pointed; scales - smooth, few, minute, imbedded, non-overlapping.

A tropical to subtropical eastern Pacific genus with 4 species.
