Body slender, compressed; head flattened; mouth long (reaching under or past eye) oblique at front, horizontal at rear; tip of tongue notched; teeth in bands, without canines; well developed pores and papillae on head, no pore between front of eyes; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VII (a little higher than 2nd dorsal) + I, 9-14; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 12-13 rays; pectoral fin long, pointed; pelvic fins I, 5, fused in disc; tail fin long (about ½ SL), rounded or pointed, 10-13 rays; scales mostly smooth, large (28-38 on side), present only behind pectoral base; no lateral line.
A neotropical genus with 5 species; with 4 endemics found in our region.
