Body elongate, somewhat compressed; head large, flattened, with puffy cheeks; mouth large, oblique; tip of tongue notched; pore between middle of eyes but none in front of eyes; preopercle with 2 pores & 1 small barbel on its edge, no other barbels on head; 1st dorsal fin with VII spines; pelvics fused to form disc; tail long, rounded; no scales; no lateral line.
The genus contains a single species, which is endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
