Body robust; head broad, depressed, with pores; snout bluntly rounded; eyes large, close together; mouth moderate sized, relatively horizontal; tongue with distinct notch in front; jaw teeth in bands, without canines; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI + I, 8-10 rays; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal I, 8-9 rays; pelvic fins fused into a disc; tail round; pectoral with upper 3-5 rays free as silky threads; scales large, rough, 31-43 on mid-side, present on midline of nape; no lateral line.
A pantropical genus with 27 species; with 5 species in and endemic to our region.
