Head flattened; head pores with fleshy flaps at margin, none on preopercle; rear nostril longer than front nostril; fringe of cirri above rear of top lip; tongue slightly notched at front; 1st dorsal VII spines; pelvic fins I, 5, separate except for inner rays being connected at their base by a low ridge; large fish without scales, small individuals with 2 or 4 imbedded, very rough scales at base of tail fin.
A single species in this genus, endemic to our region.
