Elongate, worm-like body; short, bluntly pointed head with large oblique mouth; cirri present or absent on nostrils, over eyes (flap-like when present), on nape and on preopercle; rear edge of preopercle covered with skin; dorsal fin composed entirely of spines, with many elements; pelvics I (internal), 2-3, inserted before pectoral base; all fin rays unbranched; no lateral line; usually no scales.
A neotropical genus with 6 species; 3 species occur as endemics in our region.
