Body short, robust; head large; cirri on head small, simple, 1 pair over nostrils, 1pair over eyes; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; three dorsal fins (III + XII-XIII + 9-11); dorsal fin soft rays unbranched; anal fin II, 16-18; pelvic fins completely separate; lateral line complete or incomplete, curved down behind pectoral-fin base to midline, almost invariably with notched scales at rear; scales small, none on head, breast, belly or base of pectoral fins.
This genus, with 6 species, is endemic to our region.
