Body elongate, very compressed; eye large; mouth oblique, lower jaw strongly projecting; chin without barbells and pores; tip of top jaw with a pair of large, curved canine teeth; preopercle weakly serrated; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin divided in two separate parts, with a space between them; anal fin with II short spines, base long, about equal to that of base of soft dorsal, 16-20 soft rays; scales smooth; soft dorsal and anal fins entirely scaled; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.
A neotropical genus with 2 species; represented by 1 endemic in the tropical eastern Pacific.
