Body elongate, rounded; back narrow; head low, broad, blunt; eye small; mouth opens below snout, almost horizontal; chin with 5 pores, 3 pairs of barbels, and lower jaw with row of 8-22 slender barbels along inside; top lip notched; gill rakers small; preopercle smooth or finely serrated; top corner of gill opening notched; dorsal fin with deep notch separating spiny and soft parts, IX-X slender spines, soft part long and low, 28-31 rays; anal small, with II small spines, 7-9 rays; tail fin with a blunt point; the lateral line extends to the center of the end of the tail fin.

A new world, tropical to warm temperate genus with 6 species; in our region there are five endemics.
