Body deep, moderately compressed; front nostril long, tubular, points down; rear nostril in a relatively long deep groove before eye; preopercle serrated, with a notch above lower corner; molar-like teeth on sides of jaws and on front of roof of mouth; tongue without teeth; notch between spiny and soft parts of dorsal fin; scales medium size; bases of soft dorsal and anal scaly.
The genus contains a single species, which is endemic to the eastern Pacific.
