PRIACANTHUS

BIGEYES

Body moderately elongate oval, strongly compressed; a large, upturned, oblique mouth with a projecting lower jaw; head profile asymmetrical, with tip of lower jaw above body midline; no spines on the head; preopercular spine reduced or absent in adults; fin spines with tiny spines; dorsal fin with X spines, increasing in size to rear, last longest but < 2x length of 2nd, 13-15 rays; anal fin III, 14-16; pelvic fins of moderate length, broadly fused to belly; scales small, 83-89 in lateral series, 9-12 rows above lateral line rear of preopercle scaled.

A circumtropical genus with 13 species; one species occurs in the tropical eastern Pacific and Hawaii.
