Cypselurus callopterus (Günther, 1866)

Beautyfin flyingfish, Spotted flyingfish, Ornamented flyingfish

Elongate, broadly cylindrical bodies; head short, snout short and blunt, much shorter than eye diameter; mouth small, lower jaw a little shorter than and enclosed by the upper jaw; at least some jaw teeth with 3 points; fins without spines; dorsal 11-12 rays; anal 8-10 rays; pectoral reaches past anal base, with 1st  ray unbranched; pelvics origin nearer anal origin than pectoral base, reach beyond anal origin, anal origin under middle of dorsal fin; lateral line low on the body, no branch to origin of pectoral; scales large, smooth, easily shed; 31-36 scales before dorsal fin.

Dark blue to blackish on back, silvery below; pectoral and pelvic fins yellowish with numerous black spots; dorsal and anal pale grey; tail dark grey.

Size: attains at least 28 cm.

Habitat: pelagic in surface waters.

Depth: 0-5 m.

Southern Baja and the western Gulf of California to Peru, and most of the offshore islands.
