Body compressed, lower profile more convex than upper; head large (~ 28% of SL); space between eyes convex; eye with well developed transparent fatty eyelid; mouth oblique, small end of upper jaw reaching to between rear nostril and level of front rim of eye), opens at front, lips thin, with knob at front of lower lips; teeth large, with 1 point, those of outer row large, with rounded stalks, those on upper lip in several series, inner ones irregularly spaced, not in rows; two short, widely spaced dorsal fins, IV + I, 8; 2nd dorsal strongly concave at rear, origin slightly behind that of anal; both dorsals relatively high; anal fin III, 9 ( juvenile 10) with strongly concave rear border, height 15-18% of SL; pectorals high on body, 1st ray hard, fin rounded, reaching under origin of first dorsal fin in juveniles, just before in adults; pelvics inserted behind pectoral base; tail forked, lobes much longer than head; scales moderate to large, rough on body of adults; pectoral axillary scale 5-8% of SL; lateral scales 36-38; second dorsal and anal fin completely scaled (few or no scales in juvenile); no lateral line.
(Preserved fish) Grey above, silver below; flank scales without dark streaks; pelvics pale, other fins dusky; tail with black margin.
Size: 30 cm.
Habitat: rocky shores.
Depth: 0-10 m?
The tip of Baja California and the SE Gulf of California to Colombia, the Revillagigedo Islands, strays to the Galapagos.
