Body elongate, depressed at front, compressed at rear; head broad, moderately depressed; eyes small (3-6% of SL); no tentacles over eye; filaments on snout and between eyes; mouth strongly oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth pointed; 2 spines on upper opercle, 2 more below and behind those; dorsal fin with 3 solid spines, spiny and soft parts joined; dorsal rays III, 26-28; anal 23-25 rays; pectoral 21-23 rays, 16-18 glandular pores on inner membranes of pectoral fins; dorsal and anal fins not joined to tail fin; body covered with small imbedded scales; scales on nape almost reaching transverse lateral line canal on rear of head.
Body medium dark, 4-5 wide dark bars on upper back and side, another encircling tail base; dorsal dark, with broad oblique darker bands; head pale with dark blotches over top and sides; throat pale; tail with 4 dark bars, thinnest 2 in center, pale margin; anal pale with dark margin; pectoral pale with dark bars on base and margin and 2 rows dark spots in between; pelvic pale with dark tip.
Size: 35 cm.
Habitat: soft bottoms, river mouths and bays.
Depth: 15-75 m.
Southern Mexico to Costa Rica.
