Synodus scituliceps Jordan & Gilbert, 1882

Lance lizardfish,

Body very elongate, its depth 7.0-9.5 in SL; eye small (6.3-7.6 in head_; snout relatively long and sharply pointed; lower jaw ending in a distinct fleshy knob; mouth large, slightly oblique, at front; many rows fine pointed teeth on jaws, tongue and (in 1 band) on side of roof of mouth; gill membrane under operculum with 15-18 rays; fins without spines; one dorsal fin in midbody, 10-11, with a small skin-flap fin behind it above anal fin, dorsal fin origin about equal to or a little further from snout tip than to adipose fin; anal fin 13-14 rays, its base longer than base of dorsal fin; pectorals not reaching base of pelvic fin; pelvics on abdomen behind pectoral base, with 8 rays, inner rays distinctly longer than outer rays; scales smooth; lateral-line scales 63-66, 4-6 scale rows between lateral line and base of dorsal fin; bases of rays of tail fin completely scaleless; lateral line straight, along entire body.
Greyish on back, grey on sides with silvery sheen, and white on ventral parts; scales with narrow blackish outline; tail fin dusky.
Size: to 55 cm.
Inhabits muddy bottoms of bays.
Depth: 1-172 m.
Guadalupe Island, Northern Baja, through the Gulf of California to northern Chile, including Galapagos
