Red-banded scorpionfish

Head large (45-47% SL), very bony, with numerous spines; no pit on top of head behind eyes; snout long (13-15% SL); longitudinal ridge under eye with 3 spines that extend laterally to form a shelf; teeth minute, in 4-5 rows in center of roof of mouth but not on sides; a well developed slit behind last gill arch; gill rakers 5 (4-6) + 10 (9-12); dorsal fin XIII, spines elongated, 8 ½ -10 ½; anal III, 5; last dorsal and anal rays branched; pectoral 18-20 rays, single upper unbranched ray abruptly longer than central 9-10 branched rays, with 9 unbranched rays below; scales rough, head usually scaly; vertical scale rows 43-51; small spiny rays at top and bottom of base of tail fin.

Head and body pink, grading to white on rear of body and tail base; head with 2 dark red bars, 1 up from mouth, through eye, across top of head down to mouth on other side, a second bar across top of head at rear edge of eye, and diagonally down to lower corner of operculum; body with 3 broad red bars from top to bottom, 1st at level of center of spiny dorsal, 2nd at level of front of soft dorsal, 3rd at end of tail base and base of tail fin; fins pinkish, with the first two body bars extending to edges of dorsal and anal fins.

Reaches 12.5 cm

Lives on deep reefs.

Depth range: 203-412 m.
