Darwin'S Sanddab
Body elongate (depth 39-45% LS); head relatively small 24-29% SL; upper head profile smooth, only a slight notch in front of top eye; eyes on left side, between them very narrow, with a ridge, eyes large, with prominent pupil cover; mouth medium length (upper jaw 31-35% of head length), ends under center of lower eye; blind side jaws not arched; teeth ~ equally developed on both sides of jaws, in 1 series of small, stout, uniform sized immovable teeth on each jaw, along full length of lower jaw, about front ½ of upper jaw; gill rakers slender, moderately long, 4-7 + 8-10 (12-17); dorsal fin rays 72 (70-75); 56 (51-58) anal rays; pectoral small, eye side fin 15-19% SL; base of eye-side pelvic on midline of body; tail fin with straight border; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; eye-side lateral line ~ straight, from edge of opercle to tail base; scales rough, medium sized, covering entire body and head except snout, distinctly smaller near edges of body, not easily shed; lateral line with 41-42 pored scales on body & up to 6 more on tail fin base.
Eye-side dark grey brown to blackish with dark scale edges; body with scattered white spots and blotches; ~6 white , pupil-sized spots along top and bottom body profiles; dorsal, anal and tail fins dark, with white dots along fin rays; lateral line begins in a small black spot.
Size: to 5.5 cm.
Habitat: dark sand bottoms.
Depth: 10-25 m.
Known only from the Galapagos.
