Galapagos thornyhead

Body deep (depth 37-39% SL), arched, compressed; head large (47-48% SL), top profile slightly convex; snout short; head bones strong with well developed spines; large spines on top of head from between eyes to middle of nape; no pit on top of head behind eyes; eye large (14-15% SL), with 3 short, slender tentacles on top; mouth large, slightly oblique, reaches to nearly under rear edge of eye; top and bottom jaws ~equal, lower jaw with front knob; top jaw with well developed lip covering most of side of front jaw bone; jaw teeth simple, in bands; sides of roof of mouth with teeth; longitudinal crest under eye with 5-6 spines; preopercle with 5 spines, 1st spine longest (15.9% SL) & with a small supplemental spine;  opercle with 2 minute spines; small slit behind 4th gill arch; gill rakers 5+11; dorsal fin XII, 3rd spine longest, 9 branched rays; anal fin III, 5-6 branched rays; pectoral not wedge shaped, fin bilobed, deeply notched, longest rays at top, 22-23, upper rays branched, lower rays fleshy in large fish; pelvic spine relatively long, 15-17% SL; body scales rough on sides, smooth below; scales on cheek, and between and behind eyes; no scales on side of rear top jaw bone; ~59-60 scale rows in longitudinal series; lateral line with tubed scales, complete, extending to base of tail fin, 22-24 pored scales; no swim bladder.

Head and body reddish; two blackish bars down and back from eye; a black saddle under spinous dorsal, under soft dorsal and on tail base; black marks on top of head; the center of the pectoral fin, center of spinous dorsal & center of soft dorsal with black blotches.

Reaches 18.1 cm.

Lives on deep slopes with rocks and sand.

Depth range: 402-515 m.

Known only from the Galapagos.
