Rosy jewelfish

Body elongate, oblong to oval, strongly compressed; head, strongly compressed; eye large; no fleshy papillae around edge of eye; front and rear nostrils close together; rear edge of front nostril with a flap, but no filament; mouth moderately to strongly oblique, lower jaw projecting, rear of top jaw exposed when mouth closed, without accessory bone above it; no teeth on tongue; tooth patch on center of roof of mouth, triangular to chevron shaped, not prolonged at rear; preoperculum with rear margin serrated, but no forward pointing spines on lower corner; 37-41 gill rakers; dorsal fin with X, 15-16, spine tips with short filament, spine IV or V longest (14-20% SL), at least 2 frontal soft rays elongate anal fin III, 7, at least one soft ray elongate; pectorals 18-20; pelvic inserted slightly before base of pectoral, 33-55% SL; tail fin forked, top lobe longer, 39-60% SL; scales rough, without small accessory scales on head or body, 38-46 on lateral line; head and jaws fully scaled, except lower jaw naked (sometimes a few scales at rear) and throat naked; scales around tail base 22-25; lateral line complete.

Bluish pink above, paler silvery pink below (these colors becoming more red in freshly collected specimens); iris blue grey, with a thin cream inner ring; top of nape yellow; a yellow stripe along side of snout to eye, then continuing behind eye to upper corner of operculum; dorsal fin with spiny part silvery, soft part blue-pink, with the long front rays yellow; tail fin reddish to dark pink with upper and lower borders blue-white; anal fin reddish, spines and front rays yellow; pelvics reddish, front edge yellow; pectorals pink to red.  

Reaches 32 cm.

Lives on deep reefs.

Depth range: 100-350 m.

The Galapagos, Cocos and mainland Ecuador.
