Medley searobin
A large, squarish, bony head that has many ridges and spines; snout plates prolonged, forming a "scalloped" shovel-shaped extension on each side of snout tip; preopercular crest with one large rear spine, occasionally a small supplementary spine; opercular spine short; spine above base of pectoral fin short; narrow between eyes; mouth opens at front or slightly under snout; teeth on jaws and roof of mouth simple; two separate dorsal fins, XI + 11, 1st spine serrated at front, shorter than second; anal rays 11; pectoral fins short, reaching past origin of anal fin, 12-13 rays, plus 2-3 enlarged, free rays at bottom of fin that are detached from main fin; body with rough scales; breast without scales, belly scaled; pored lateral-line scales 50-52.
Upper ¾ of head and body bright red, white below; two darker red saddles below each dorsal fin; top of head with small, irregular yellowish spots; dorsal fins red, with scattered yellow blotches on 2nd dorsal, blackish membrane margins; underside of tail base black; tail fin red, central rays yellow, front of lower margin black; anal fin red; pectoral fin red, with central rays blackish from base to fin edge.
Size: reaches at least 13.2 cm.
Inhabits sand-mud bottoms.
Depth: 400-465 m.
