Body slender, wider than deep at front, tapering to a compressed tail base; head depressed; head without pores; eyes moderate sized (length 21% head length), at top of but not reaching above head profile, distance between eyes ~1.2 times eye length; most parts of head and front of nape with papillae; anterior and posterior nostrils tubular, front one longer; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; gill rakers 9; dorsal fin VII (spines I-III very long, filamentous, longest reaching to base of 2nd last ray of 2nd dorsal + I, 11; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; 2nd dorsal and anal fins long; anal fin I, 10; pectoral 20, pelvic fins I, 5, completely separate, rays 1-4 branched, tips not expanded, not reaching to anus, 5th ray not branched, 4th ray longest; tail fin long (1/3 SL), rounded, with a pointed tip; body all scaled to level of origin of dorsal fin, front scales smaller, nape naked, chest, belly and between pelvic fins scaled; scales rough, in lateral series ~41; 2 large very rough scales on tail fin base; no lateral line.
Preserved fish pale, a large vertical black oval on opercle; median fins dusky; pelvic fins black.
Reaches at least 5.8 cm.
Depth: 137-146 m.
Habitat: reef and sand.
Known from a single male collected at Cocos Island.
