Lavenberg's goby
Body slender, compressed; head 32.4% SL; eye length 9.5% SL; snout shorter than eye; no crest along top of head and nape; head without pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; front & rear nostrils tubular; mouth oblique, reaches to under front edge of eye; each jaw with wide-spaced, curved canines (6 above, 4 below) outside a wide band of tiny, pointed teeth; tongue pointed; 8 gill rakers; dorsal fin V (1st spine filamentous) + I, 14 rays; I, 9 anal rays; pectoral 20 rays, reach to anal fin origin; pelvics I,5, fused into disc with small front border; tail fin short, round, with 17 segmented rays; body scalation not known.
Preserved fish brown; body with 10 narrow pale bars (each with a thin dark vertical line down center) between base of pectoral fin and base of tail fin; head with 2 oblique pale bars behind eye across nape, another short one between those on preopercle, 4 bars above and between eyes, 2 bars under eye, interspaces paler than bars at front, snout and lips with irregular blotches; no spots on cheek or operculum; vertical fins dusky; soft dorsal and middle of tail fin with diffuse bars, some dark dots along base of soft dorsal; paired fins with dark bases.
Size: 2.6 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: 137-146 m.
Known from a single fish collected at Cocos Island.
