Ilisha fuerthii (Steindachner, 1875)

Pacific ilisha, Hachet herring

Elongate, compressed; eye large; forehead concave; mouth oblique, opens up, lower jaw projecting, top jaw not reaching beyond center of eye; jaw teeth small, none at center of top jaws; gill rakers short, thick, few; dorsal fin a little before mid-body, 16 rays; small pelvics present, 6-7 rays, before dorsal fin; anal fin with long base, origin under last dorsal rays, 46-50; scales of moderate size with sharp keel of 23-25 + 11-14 scutes along belly.

Overall silvery; tail yellow, pectoral yellow, black tip.

Size: to 28.5 cm.

Habitat: coastal seas, frequently entering estuaries and brackish river mouths.

Depth: 0-10 m?

Southern Mexico to northern Peru.
