Anchoa nasus (Kner & Steindachner, 1867)

Longnose anchovy, Bignose anchovy

Body fairly round, elongate; snout pointed, long, > ¾ eye diameter; top jaw long, reaching almost to gill opening, tip pointed; membrane between gill covers not expanded at rear; third gill arch with a few short rakers on its rear face; 21-28 lower gill rakers; no large canine teeth; dorsal fin origin in mid-body; anal fin base medium length, iii,20-25 rays, origin under or behind base of last dorsal fin ray; pectoral short, not reaching pelvics.

Silver stripe along flank broad, ~ eye diameter wide, faint or absent in large fish.

Size: 17 cm.

Habitat: marine, coastal pelagic, enters bays, tolerates lower salinities.

Depth: 0-10 m?

The Gulf of California to Chile.
