Body moderately elongate and compressed; head pointed, with nearly horizontal upper profile; eye moderate to large; mouth moderately large, slightly oblique, lower jaw projecting; lower rear corner of top jaw bone with prominent, bluntly pointed, ventral projection; rear edge of preopercle serrated; operculum with 3 broad flat spines at rear; dorsal fin with VIII spines, 12, strongly notched, 3rd spine longest; anal rays III,8; pectoral rays 15; tail base deep, strongly compressed; tail slightly concave; scales small, rough; fins with scaled bases and scales along most of the fin rays.
Upper head and body pink, whitish below (uniform red in dead fish); iris blue-grey; a yellow brown stripe from center of rear of eye to tip of snout; a red stripe from the rear of the eye along the body midline to the center of the tail fin; a yellowish stripe along top of top jaw back toward lower rear corner of operculum, this becomes broken as it proceeds back; a yellowish stripe along top of body on each side of midline, from center of nape back to top edge of tail fin; unpaired fins pinkish, outer half of dorsal fin yellow; upper and lower edges of tail yellow; front edge of anal and pelvic fins yellow.
Size: to 26 cm.
Inhabits rocky and coral reefs.
Depth: 50-250m.
Baja California, Costa Rica and Panama, the Galapagos.
