Peruvian salema

Elongate, compressed; head conical, compressed; eyes large; chin with 2 pairs of pores, rear pores larger, well separated, not in a hole; mouth short, oblique, lower jaw projecting; teeth minute, in bands on jaws, on roof of mouth; dorsal fin - spiny and soft parts almost separate, XII spines, 12-14 rays, soft fin with shorter base than spiny fin; tail shallowly forked; anal - III small spines, 12 (12-13) rays, soft part similar in size and form to soft dorsal; longitudinal scales 70-80; scale rows above lateral line parallel to lateral line; 9-10 scale rows between lateral line and origin of dorsal fin.

Silvery; a single dark brown line along the flank .

Size: reaches at least 5.5 cm, probably much larger

Habitat: lives around rocky reefs.

Depth: 0-33 m?

Northern to central Peru.
