Body elongate; eye moderate; head long and depressed; top of head rough on rear half, covered with thin skin; central groove on top of head large, deep, with straight edges; bony process on nape short, funnel shaped, plate at base of dorsal fin half-moon shaped; 3 pairs of barbells (on chin and both jaws), top barbels long, 28.4-38.2% of SL; gill opening restricted to sides by adhesion of gill membranes to breast; gill rakers 13-16; rakers on posterior surface of all arches; lips fleshy, moderately thick; top jaw moderate, with fine teeth at front in a continuous broad band; roof of mouth with two patches of molariform teeth, those patches large, with numerous molars, those patches larger and close together in female, smaller and well separated in male; dorsal rays I, 7, dorsal spine short, thick, shorter than pectoral spine; anal rays 24-27, base long (21.0-24.5%SL); pectoral rays I, 10-11, pectoral spine 18.5-22.5% of SL, with short, inconspicuous serrations on inner margin; tail fin lobes wide, rounded.
Preserved fish brown on back, paler on sides, and white below; fins dusky.
Size: attains 24 cm.
Inhabits brackish river mouths and mangroves.
Depth: 0-20 m?
Known only from Colombia.
