Body robust; head of large males broad, deep and with a very blunt snout; eye large, wide between eyes in large fish; front nostril with a tuft of 6-12 cirri; a tuft of 8-13 cirri over each eye; a row of 12-24 cirri on each side of nape; head cirri all short (<1/2 opercle length); mouth large, slightly oblique, rear of top jawbone exposed, not in a sheath; a band of teeth on center of roof of mouth, a band on each side of roof of mouth; gill rakers short, 4+8; dorsal fin XVIII-XX, 13 (12-14), longest spines in middle, a notch between spines and rays, longest rays are longer than longest spines; anal rays II, 19 (18-20); pectoral rays 15 (14-16); 3 pelvic soft rays; 70-74 (68-75) lateral line scales, those larger than adjacent scales; 8-10 scales before dorsal fin; 14-15 rows of scales between LL and 6th dorsal spine; head with scales on upper opercle; anal fin with small patch of scales on membranes of rear rays.
Male: grey brown with a yellow cast over body and head; iris bright blue; snout, cheeks and lips with small black and larger bright blue spots; scattered blue spots on rear 2/3 of body. Female: pale brown to greenish to dark brown; body with ~ 5 broad, irregular dark bars that extend onto the dorsal fin, those bars overlaid by regularly arranged blackish spots; body and fins with pale brown and white spots; head pale tan; dark spots on nape and upper opercle edged in red-brown; dense small dark spots on snout and cheeks, and front of top lip; dark bars across lower lips and rear half of top lips; dorsal cream with dark bars; tail fin pale with several dark bars; anal fin with pale spots along its length; base of pectoral cream.
Reaches 35 cm.
Habitat: weed covered rocky shores.
Depth: 1-10 m?
Paita, Peru, to Coquimbo, Chile.
