Brown brotula

Body elongate, slender and somewhat compressed; head relatively low (height 13.6-16.2 % of SL); wide between eyes; top jaw bone expanded vertically at rear, but rear end relatively low; rear 3 pores of bottom jaw small; snout rounded; mouth large; a sharp spine on opercle that has 1 tip; eye relatively large (2.1-2.6% of SL); preopercle with 3 pores at lower rear corner, upper part with a pore; gill rakers 13-17, 2-4 long rakers in angle of arch; origin of dorsal fin at level of middle of pectoral fins; pelvic fins inserted below rear part of head; dorsal rays 66-77; anal rays 51-57; origin of anal fin under dorsal rays 20-25; pectoral rays 18-22; tail fin rays 15-16; lateral line indistinct, continuous, complete; body covered with relatively large overlapping scales, about 110 in midlateral series; patch of cheek scales with 8 (6-9) vertical rows of scales; belly with scales; penis long, curved, tapering, thin; 2 pairs of long pseudoclaspers associated with penis, outer pair slender, ending in a spine-like tip, inner pair long, thin, with a fleshy appendix at rear.

Light brown, belly yellowish; dorsal fin with brown base, yellow center, pale outer part; tail and anal fins yellow .

Size: reaches 8 cm.

Inhabits shallow reefs.

Depth: 6-27 m.

The SE Gulf of California to Costa Rica.
