Body robust; head broad, snout blunt; eye large; nostrils with cirri; a branched cirrus over each eye; large bunch of heavily branched cirri on each side of nape, length of the nape groups equal to gill cover; mouth large, slightly oblique, top rear jawbone exposed, not in a sheath; teeth at sides and on center front of roof of mouth small, equal in size in both areas; dorsal fin XVII-XVIII, 10-12, first dorsal spine long (> 1.5 times opercle length), but < longest rays, size then decreases to 3rd and 4th spines then increase again, front rays 1.5x length of 1st spine, notch between spines and rays; anal rays II, 16-17; pectoral rays 15 (14-15); 3 pelvic soft rays; 60-64 lateral line scales; head and nape scaleless; dorsal fin with only small patches of scales in front of rays after the 4th spine; anal scaleless; tail fin with scales on inner 1/8, pectoral fin with scales on inner 1/6.
Brownish; head mottled; 4 bars on body, 3 under spiny dorsal, 1 under 8th soft ray; 5 less distinct bars before, between and behind these; all bars extend across dorsal fin; an ocellus on dorsal between the front 2 bars; anal fin with 7 alternating light and dark bars not linked to body bars; tail fin with a light tear-drop shaped spot on the center of its base, rest of fin is dark, with light spots along rear margin; pectorals with a dark bar at base, stronger below.
Size: reaches at least 9 cm.
Lives occurs on shallow, weed-covered rocky reefs.
Depth: 0-4 m.
Central to southern Baja, on the Pacific coast.
