Moderately robust; head slender and snout pointed; rear nostril not tubular, with a raised rim; teeth of jaws conical, without serrations; 1 row teeth on sides of upper jaw, three longitudinal rows of teeth at front of upper jaw; dorsal and anal fins developed as skin-covered ridges, but relatively tall and distinct; dorsal fin origin on top of head, well in front of gill opening.
Dark brown to greenish-brown, peppered with numerous small white spots .
Size: to 170 cm.
Habitat: rocky reefs.
Depth: 1-70 m.
The Gulf of California to Peru.
