Snout long and narrow; jaws slender, narrow, strongly arched and not closing completely; pores along upper lip are elongate slits with ruffled margins; teeth conical sharp, with large fangs alternating with smaller teeth along jaws; eye large, at about middle of mouth; front nostril a simple tube, rear nostril a large hole with a raised rim above and before eye; head and trunk equal to or shorter than tail; dorsal and anal fins very evident, dorsal origin over or a little behind gill.

Uniform brown to grey, without distinct markings.

Size: reaches 93 cm.

Habitat: rocky bottoms.

Depth: 2-40 m.

Gulf of California to northern Peru.
