Snout long and narrow; jaws slender, narrow, strongly arched and not closing completely; teeth conical sharp, with large fangs alternating with smaller teeth along jaws; eye large, at about middle of mouth; front nostril a simple tube, rear nostril a large hole with a raised rim above and before eye; head and trunk equal to or shorter than tail; dorsal and anal fins very evident, dorsal origin over or a little behind gill.
Dark brown, head and throat with numerous irregular white to yellowish blotches and spots; body with a series of large pale, stellate blotches in a brown mesh.
Size: grows to 90 cm.
Habitat: rocky and rubble bottoms.
Depth: 5-25 m.
Known only from Japan and the Galapagos.
