Oblique-banded snapper
Body fusiform, slender; flattened between eyes; jaws about equal, lower slightly projecting; both jaws with bands of fine teeth, outer ones enlarged, but not with large canines; tooth patch at front of roof of mouth V shaped, without rear extention; 12-13 lower gill rakers; dorsal fin continuous, not notched between spiny and soft parts, X, 10-11; anal fin III, 8; last ray of dorsal and anal fins conspicuously longer than preceding rays, usually produced in a filament; pectorals long, about 2/3 head length, 15-17 rays; tail fin forked; scales relatively small, 60-66 rows on lateral line, those above lateral line parallel to those below; dorsal and anal fins scaleless.
Body red to pink with four oblique yellow bars on side; dorsal and tail fins yellow, other fins pink.
Size: grows to 50 cm.
Habitat: benthic to semipelagic over rocky bottoms.
Depth: 70-300 m; most abundant below 100 m.
Widely distributed in the Indo-central Pacific; known as a vagrant in the Galapagos.
