Pacific Guavina

Body elongate; head long, flattened, wide, blunt;  snout about equal to eye, bluntly rounded; front nostril a long tube, pointing forward at front of snout, rear nostril a hole with a raised rim before upper part of eye; mouth large, lower jaw projecting;upper and lower jaw with 3-4 rows of small teeth and outer row of 3-4 large, widely spaced teeth, without canines; gill membranes broadly joined to throat, with 6 rays; dorsal fins VII + I, 10, fins well separated,  first dorsal lower than second, base of 2nd dorsal < distance from the end of that base to tail fin; anal fin with I, 10; pectoral 16 rays; pelvic fins I, 5, long, completely and widely separate;  tail fin bluntly straight; almost completely scaled except for underside of head and a small area on the snout before the eye; scales smooth on head and front of body and rough behind level of front of second dorsal fin, small (89 in lateral series); no lateral line.
Pale grey brown head and body; head with 3 dark stripes across operculum, the thickest one starting from rear of eye, a dark line from mouth across lower cheek; iris dark, with thin yellow ring around pupil; body with many small dark spots forming irregular longitudinal lines; various dark blotches upper rear of body; a large dark blotch on upper tail fin base;  dorsal, anal & tail fins spotted with grey brown; pelvics grey; a dark bar on pectoral base; outer edges of dorsals, and anal, front edge of pelvics and top and bottom borders of tail fin yellow.
Size: 30 cm.
Habitat: Fresh and brackish water; in high-intertidal crab burrows in mangroves.
Depth: 0-10 m.
Southern Mexico  to northern Peru.
