Aetomylaeus asperrimus (Gilbert in Jordan & Gilbert, 1898)

Disc rhomboidal, about twice as wide as long; pectorals pointed, convex at front and concave at rear, do not continue onto rostrum; head narrow, distinctly raised from disc, protruding forwards; snout conical; front edges of pectoral fins join head under eyes, without a ridge under eyes connected to the disc; very shallowly notched skin fold between nostrils; spiracles about twice as large as eyes, partly visible from above; 7 series of teeth in flat, pavement-like plates; dorsal fin before pelvic-fin free rear tips; tail slender, about 3 times as long as disc, no tail fin, with 1 spine at base, after dorsal fin.
Upper surface reddish brown to grey, with 8-10 narrow transverse white bars that grade into spots at back of disc; white below.
Size: 150 cm disc width.
Habitat: benthic on coastal soft bottoms.
Depth: 5 to 50 m.
Southern Baja to northern Peru; the Galapagos.
