Head and body flattened below and completely covered in a heavy armor of bony plates and spines; bony keel along side of face narrow, serrated, ends in a backward-pointing spine; snout long, depressed; no nasal or rostral spines; snout plates long, thin, parallel, a short, blunt, double-tipped spine between them; mouth barbels filamentous, divided: chin with 8 pairs, upper lips with 3 pairs, third pair much larger & thicker than others; gill rakers 26; a short preopercular spine; two spines above eye, first with one point, second serrated; the largest spine on the head behind the eye; dorsal fin divided into 2 parts, VIII + 19; pectoral fin with main fin (11-13) plus 2 free rays below; anal fin without spines, 21; pelvic fins are wide apart, below base of pectorals, with I, 5 rays; body with 21 spiny plates in top and bottom rows, 29 plates on upper side row (first 21 with single-pointed spine, last 8 with double-pointed spine), lower side row with 25 plates (the first 23 with a simple spine, the last 2 with a double-pointed spine).
Body intense red; pupil black, iris iridescent yellow.
Reaches 8 cm.
Habitat: on soft bottoms.
Depth 60 m.
Known from a single specimen collected off La Paz, western Gulf of California.
