Large-fin pipefish

Snout moderately long, 50-55% of head length, robust (depth 6 in snout length); head length 6.8-8.2 in SL; ridge along top of snout and head low, no spines along side of snout; adult with no ridge along upper operculum; ridge along side of body ends at level near anus; upper ridge of body discontinuous with that of tail just behind dorsal fin; ridges along bottom of body and tail joined; body ridges not elevated; body and tail rings 16-18 + 40-43; no skin flaps; anal fin 2-4; dorsal fin 34-46, fin low, its origin on trunk; pectoral fin 12-15; tail fin large, 10; brood pouch under tail, its plates folded inwards.

Light to dark brown; usually dark stripes on side and underside of snout; sometimes indistinct pale bars on body.

Reaches maximum size of 26 cm.

Depth 0-20 m?

Southern Colombia to Chile.
