Head slender, body long & slender; snout short, sharply pointed; top of head covered with short, close-set slender spines a small, narrow, triangular cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; top of head and upper opercular margin spiny; 3 dorsal fins: III + XII-XV + 8-10, no soft rays branched; anal soft rays19-20; pectoral 16 (15-17); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; scales medium to large, 34-36 in longitudinal series; body scales rough, none on belly; head scaleless; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored (16-17), those on rear part notched (20-23).
Body with 4-5 irregular red-brown bars; head with a cluster of red-brown spots behind eye, a dark spot under front of eye and another under center of eye; tail base red-brown with a black bar at rear; tail fin red-brown with a clear central bar; 1st dorsal fin with black spines, the membranes between the spines red-brown and behind the last spine yellow; 2nd and 3rd dorsals with diagonal barring across the spines; anal red-brown with clear outer margin; pectoral with a grey cast; breeding male with blackish cast over head, body and dark parts of fins.
Size: reaches 3.1 cm.
Habitat: boulders.
Depth: 6-14 m.
Restricted to the Tres Marias Islands, central Mexico, and the mainland coast opposite those islands between Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit.
