Atlantic crested-goby

Body robust, somewhat compressed; high crest on nape extending from or just before dorsal to between eyes; deep depression before and below eye; 1 pore between center of eyes, another between rear border of eyes; cheek with 7 vertical rows of papillae; mouth opens at front, oblique, reaches under pupil; tongue truncate to broadly rounded; teeth in upper jaw in a wide band, outer row of enlarged conical teeth; edge of preoperculum with indentations at each pore; gill membranes broadly joined to body under throat, with 5 rays; dorsal fin VI, 4th spine longest, at times reaching 3rd-4th ray of 2nd dorsal, + I, 10; length of 2nd dorsal base > distance from 2nd dorsal base to tail fin; anal fin I, 9; pectoral 17-19 (16-20), reaches past anal fin origin in large fish; pelvic I, 5 disk complete; tail fin rounded, about as long as head; body and top of head (except top of nape and crest, and edge of preopercle) with large rough scales; no lateral line.

Female - pale, upper head and body mottled with blotches of olive-brown to red-brown, cheeks and operculum may be covered with pale spots; rear of1st dorsal with a vertically elongate orange and black ocellus or partial ocellus; several pale lines radiate behind eye and along body; rear of body with 2 rows of dark blotches; base of tail fin with a thin dark bar; male - more extensive dark mottling, dark violet to black when breeding. juveniles with brown blotches at rear & pale stripes at front, an orange blotch bordered at front by dark bar on outer 1/2 of 1st dorsal.

Size: 11 cm.

Habitat: shallow, quiet bays, inlets, estuaries mangroves, also into freshwater.

Depth: 0-6 m.

An Atlantic species known from around the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal.
