Head plump, rounded; mouth oblique; snout profile very steep; narrow between eyes (< ½ eye diameter); chin with 2 barbels; front nostril with small barbel below it & small flap on its rear rim, no papilla on mid-snout; dorsal fin VII (sometimes 1st 1-2 filamentous in male) + I,11-13 (usually 12) rays; anal 9-11 (usually 10) rays; pectoral 18-21 (usually 19-20) rays; pelvics fused in disc; scales large, rough, none on head; scaling of body variable: minimum - a triangular patch on tail base + 1 short row under pectoral fin, maximum - triangular patch extends forward to under rear edge of 1st dorsal + 2 rows under pectoral fin extending back to almost meet the rear triangle, females more heavily scaled than males; 2 small rough scales on base of tail fin; row of 4 scales along tail base.
(Preserved fish) Tan to pale brown; a small spot at top rear corner of each of preopercle & operculum; a series of dark brown bars that are darkest at their edges - 2 wavy ones across top of head, 7-10 on body, (not extending onto belly, with series of short streaks at midflank), 1 on base of tail fin; pectoral with a spot at top & bottom, sometimes connected as a bar; dorsal with 2 stripes, lower narrower & stronger; anal dusky, outer edge white; pelvic dusky with 2 stripes; tail & pectoral clear to dusky.
Size: 2.1 cm.
Habitat: coastal lagoons, tidepools.
Depth: 1-10 m.
Central Baja California and both sides of the Gulf of California south to Chacala, Mexico.
