Head ~round; mouth oblique; snout blunt, sloping abruptly down at front; narrow (< ½ eye diameter) between eyes; tongue tip blunt; no barbels on head; gill rakers short; dorsal fin VII (none elongate) + I, 10-11 (usually 11) rays; 9-11 (usually 10) anal rays; 14-17 (usually 16-17) pectoral rays; pelvics fused in disc; male genital papilla slender, pointed; body completely scaled behind a line under rear 1/3 of soft dorsal, with a triangular extension of scales forwards along mid-flank to pectoral base; scales large, rough, in 26-31 longitudinal rows; 5-6 large, very rough scales on base of tail fin.
Head and body caramel brown; female uniform body and fins, entire head and body densely speckled with black dots; male darker, especially on head, plus 6-8 narrow dark bars on flank, fins dusky.
Size: 5.0 cm.
Habitat: estuaries, mud bottom.
Depth: 1-10 m.
The Gulf of Panama.
