Island triplefin
Head broad, body robust; a well developed cirrus over eye, no cirri on nape; bone bearing nostrils with a row of small spines; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; top of head and upper opercular margin spiny; 3 dorsal fins: III + XIII + 8-9, 1-4 soft rays branched; anal soft rays 15-16; pectoral 15 (14-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; scales medium to large, 29-30 in longitudinal series; body scales rough, except smooth on side of belly; head scaleless except small patch of rough scales on opercle; large scale covering upper 2/3 of inner base of pectoral; scales of 1st row above lateral line much larger than those in 2nd row; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored (14-16), those on rear part notched (17-19).
Body with 5 brown irregular bars, and another on tail base; head heavily mottled with brown, and with several brown bars down from eye; 1st dorsal whitish with brown spots; 2nd dorsal with large brown blotch at front, brown and white mottling behind; 3rd dorsal with brown and white diagonal barring; tail fin brown, with a white basal bar and white rear edge; anal and pectoral fins with brown and cream alternating bars.
Size: 3 cm.
Habitat: rocky shores.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Endemic to the Revillagigedo Islands, Mexico.
