Head broad, body robust; eye large, high; cirrus over eye well developed, flap-like, with fringed edge; no cirri on nape; top of head behind eyes with small, close-set spines; bone bearing nostrils with spines; no teeth on sides of roof of mouth; top of head and upper opercular margin spiny; 3 dorsal fins: III + XI-XIII + 8-10, 4-8 soft rays branched; anal soft rays16-18; pectoral 15 (14-16); pelvics I (imbedded), 2; scales medium to large, 31-33 in longitudinal series; body scales rough, belly ranging from completely covered with smooth scales to scales only along side, to scaleless; head scaleless except well developed patch of rough scales on opercle; no large scale covering upper 2/3 of inner base of pectoral; first 2 scalesabove lateral line equal in size; lateral line in 2 straight, slightly overlapping sections, scales on front part pored (16-18), those on rear part notched (17-20).
Body with brown edges on scales forming a meshwork; 4 irregular dark bars on body and one on base of tail; head with two dark bars under eye, and another on preopercle, operculum mostly dark; top of tail base with white stripe; tail fin dark, with clear central bar; dorsal fins and anal fin with diagonal dark bars; pectoral with dark base, fin with alternating dark and yellowish bars.
Size: 5 cm.
Habitat: rocky shores.
Depth: 0-15 m.
SE Gulf of California to southern Mexico.
