Speckled-tail flounder
Body a wide oval; snout short (~ 20% of head length); eyes on left side of head, close together, large, lower one in advance of upper one, with a crest between them with 1-2 backward pointing spines; with tentacles on rear edges of eyes (may be lost in large males); mouth small, not reaching past front of eye; teeth small, pointed, almost entirely on blind side jaws; gill rakers are 5-6 small fleshy papillae; dorsal origin just in front of top eye; pectoral fin on both sides, larger on eye side, large on blind-side (length ~ 40% of head length); eye side pelvic with base only slightly longer than that of blind side, origin not before blind side fin, and well behind lower eye; lateral line on eye side only, arched over pectoral; scales rough on eye side, smooth on blind side; 59-68 scales on lateral line; dorsal and anal fins scaly, dorsal scaled on blind side as well.
Eye-side blackish brown, scattered black and white spots, black spots prominent along bases of dorsal and anal fins; 3 large black spots along lateral line - above pectoral tip, rear of body, on caudal peduncle; dorsal and anal with scattered black and white spots; tail with 5 black spots forming a band across middle; blind side with 5-6 dusky cross bars - 2 on operculum, 4 behind.
ize: 20 cm.
Habitat: sand, mud and shell bottoms.
Depth: 45-235 m.
Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru, and Malpelo.
